Unlimited: Beautiful Feet
Apr 25, 2023 927
As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15b).
In middle eastern cultures, feet are not beautiful, In fact, feet are considered the most disgusting and shameful part of the body. You never touched other people’s feet or let their feet touch you. In those cultures, if you want to show your disgust for someone in an extreme way, you will kick them or throw your shoe at them. This is a way of bringing your foot into contact with the person for whom you wish to show contempt. Even God refers to the custom of throwing a shoe over Edom (See Ps. 60:6-8; and also Ps. 108:7-9.)
This sheds light on what Jesus did before the last supper, when in the absence of a servant to perform this degrading task for the disciples, Jesus took a towel and washed their feet himself (John 13:4–9.)
Those who bring good news have beautiful feet.
In the Old Testament, the imagery of “beautiful feet” running quickly with good news was used to announce victory over the enemies of God’s people (Nahum 1:15) and the freedom of God’s people from the Babylonian captivity (Isa. 52:7.)
When Paul writes to the church at Ephesus, he describes the armour of God as our defence against the spiritual forces of darkness. There he refers to having our,
…feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Eph. 6:15.)
Spiritual Application
Think about where your feet have been during the last week. Wherever they’ve gone, have they been bringing the message of good news?
