Unlimited: Creation Waits

For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed (Romans 8:19).

On this same theme, the apostle John writes,

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!…  Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is (1 John 3:1–2.)

This verse isn’t saying that what will be revealed will be how good we are, or our perfect law-keeping, or anything like that. The context here is the same context as Romans 8:19: the extravagant love of God for us. What will be revealed before all creation is the visible and glorious reality of our standing as God’s children in his love.

With all of creation, we wait patiently for that great day.

The reality is that most days you probably feel pretty ordinary. You don’t really feel on top of the world, and you don’t feel like someone special.

But all that is going to change. Here, the apostle Paul makes the revelation of the children of God the centrepiece of the new creation of God, just as the creation of our first parents was the centrepiece of God’s first creation.

So too, with all of creation, we wait patiently for that great day.

Spiritual Application

“Eager expectation” means waiting with excitement. How would you rate your excitement about being a child of God out of 10? If it isn’t a 10/10, whose fault is it: yours or God’s?
