Unlimited: God’s House is Built on Love

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11, NIV).

When the Jews returned from the Babylonian captivity, they started rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. However, the returned exiles were impoverished. They knew that the temple they would build would be nowhere near the size nor be as rich as the original temple that Solomon had built.

As a result, the ceremony for the laying of the new temple’s foundation received a mixed response. While some people shouted for joy, others wept aloud (Ezra 3:12).

But notice what the priests and the Levites did. As the foundation stone was laid,

With praise and thanksgiving, they sang to the Lord: “He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever” (Ezra 3:11, NIV).

God’s house is founded and built on love. No matter how insignificant this temple may have seemed to them, it was to be the most honoured of all the Jewish temples, since it would host the Son of God, the one who was himself the very source and definition of love. In fact, he is the foundation stone of the temple himself (Matthew 21:42).

In a more important sense, you are also, in your body and person, the house of God, if the foundation of your life is the love of God through Jesus Christ. Let your life be built on love. – Eliezer Gonzalez

Eli’s Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your own life. What has it been built on? Has it been built on love? Do you want it to? Do you need to dedicate your life to God in the same way that the temple was dedicated?
