Unlimited: They Were Afraid

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid (Mark 16:8, NIV).

On Sunday morning, the women have arrived at the tomb to find the stone rolled away, and an angel who has told them that Jesus has risen from the dead.

If you had been with the women that morning, how would you have felt?

The reaction of the women was only natural.

How would you have reacted if you had come to the tomb and found the stone rolled away and an angel inside with a message for you?

The reaction of the women was entirely understandable.  Mark tells us that they were in such a state of shock that they were left trembling, completely bewildered.

In fact, the Greek indicates that they ran from the tomb in a state of confusion and fear.

Although the angel had told them to tell the disciples that the Lord rose. Mark tells us that the women were so shocked that they said nothing, at least initially. We know from the other gospels that they did tell the disciples after a while.

We easily become afraid because we don’t understand.

It’s significant that the gospels describe the resurrection realistically in terms of the reactions of the eyewitnesses, and not as you would find in some romanticized story embellished by tradition.

The women were afraid because they didn’t understand. They didn’t understand what was happening. They didn’t understand God’s plan.

When you don’t understand, you can also become afraid.

But when you know how good God is, even if you can’t understand what is happening, then fear is replaced by trust.

Jesus had tried to teach and to show them for years, just how good God was, but they hadn’t understood.

Eli’s Reflection: Do you become afraid when you don’t understand? Do you truly understand the goodness of God in your life? Take your fears to the Lord and ask Him for wisdom and understanding. Read His Word to build your faith.
