Daily Good News – Living with God Through Eternity

“The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection of the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage” (Luke 20:34-36).

The Sadducees were the wealthy governing class of Israel. They valued their wealth and position so much that they collaborated with their Roman conquerors to avoid being inconvenienced. Most of the priests and aristocrats were Sadducees. They had different beliefs from other sections of Jewish society; in particular, they did not believe in the resurrection from the dead. They lived only by the written law of the Old Testament – the law of Moses.

They decided to trap Jesus by daring him to answer a trick question about the resurrection. If a woman was married to seven brothers one after the other, marrying the next when the previous brother died, and if she had no children from any of the marriages, whose wife would she be at the resurrection? This was a question that made a joke out of the idea of a resurrection, but no other wise man had been able to answer their question.

Jesus, however, did answer it, by telling them that God’s world will be completely different and the needs of this present life are very different to those of God’s world. Perhaps he was even telling them gently that they would do well to stop speculating on questions such as this and focus on the important things of being right with God.

We don’t need to understand exactly what life will be like after Jesus comes at the end of this present age. What the Bible does tell us is that we shall all be given new bodies. Jesus indicates here that there will no longer be a need for reproduction. So we can understand by this that every person in the new earth will have been saved by the blood of Jesus, and will have a unique story of God’s love to share throughout the universe for all eternity.
