“The groans of the dying rise from the city and the souls of the wounded cry out for help. But God charges no one with wrongdoing” (Job 24:12).
The problem for theodicy and the central issue for all mankind is here clearly enunciated. It is one of our most urgent longings; the desire for justice. Despite a world scene that appears to offer little comfort for our yearning, it persists with relentless vigour. Could this primal longing signal the reality it craves? If not, we are idiots in an asylum with no prospect of escape. Job could not accept such a proposal—and neither should we.
