I am about to die but God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land, to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Genesis 50:24
These were Joseph’s words immediately after he had assured his brothers that he would be kind to them and provide for them and their children. The best we can do for those we care about is circumscribed by the fact that we will not always be here for them. We will die and then our honest efforts and best intentions will peter out. Our ultimate assurance is that God will not forget us. Everything depends on his faithfulness to ourselves and those we love. Death may interrupt our plans and hopes, but not God’s. He will come to our aid, and love will go on, and on . . .
