“Jesus said, ‘No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again’” (John 10:18).
Notice that it was Jesus’ personal choice to go to the Cross. He was not compelled to die for us; rather he laid down his life for us of his own accord. It was not the case of the Father sacrificing his unwilling Son for our sins, but the case of the Son himself choosing to die in our place.
Remember that God gave freedom of choice to Adam and Even in the Garden of Eden. They were free to obey or disobey.
In the same way, Jesus had perfect freedom to choose whether to fulfill the rescue plan for the human race. This is a measure of his love for us. It invites our daily response of gratitude, love and commitment.
