Life Boat

The disciples were caught in a furious storm in the middle of a lake. You can read the story in the gospel of Mark, 4:35–41. They said to him, “Jesus, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38) Jesus was asleep on a cushion at the back of the boat.

In the same way we can think that when we are going through the storms of life, that Jesus is somehow peacefully resting on his comfy, cushioned, throne in heaven, gazing absent-mindedly over all his dominions. We can think that he doesn’t care about us.

But there are three things about this story that we must remember.

Firstly, Jesus does care. He was just waiting to be invited to help. After all, these burly fishermen all thought that had it all under control – at least at the beginning.

Secondly, Jesus was there with them in the boat, all the time. The disciples only remembered that Jesus was there when they had exhausted their own strength and know-how.

Finally, Jesus let them feel the fury of the storm. If he hadn’t let them go through the storm, they would never have known that at the end, his power was greater than any storm of life. And there wasn’t a storm in hell that was going to sink that boat with Jesus in it.

That boat is your life. Make sure Jesus is in it.

Peace, be still.
