We sometimes hear a lot about the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, and rightly so. However, let’s get the prophets of the Bible in perspective.
The Jewish people considered Moses to be the greatest of all the prophets. In his final instructions to the people, Moses had told them that,
The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear (Deuteronomy 18:15)
This coming prophet would be one whose authority would be greater that Moses, since the people were told to follow him. In the first century there was clearly an expectation that the Prophet spoken of by Moses would soon arrive.
Jesus clearly identified himself as that prophet when he said,
“He [Moses] wrote about Me” (John 5:46).
Referring to the Mosaic prophecy, Christ’s contemporaries said of him, ‘This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world’” (John 6:14). After Christ’s death and resurrection, Peter explained that Jesus Christ was the One spoken of by Moses (Acts 3:22-23).
For the Jewish people, the temple represented the totality of Moses’ teachings. That’s why Jesus stood in the temple and announced that,
One greater than the temple is here – Matthew 12:6
Moses and the temple represented all the traditions of the established religion of the day.
Jesus came to supersede all of these things because,
Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses – Heb 3:3
Moses was good, but Jesus is better.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. – John 1:17
Jesus is the greatest prophet of all. There never has been and never will be another prophet as authoritative as Jesus.
So remember… in your study of Biblical prophecy, never let anything obscure the message of Jesus – the good news that he preached, and the atonement and resurrection by which he obtained salvation for the world.
