Unlimited: Boasting is Excluded

Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith (Romans 3:27.)

Those of the Jewish faith in the time of the apostle Paul were great at boasting. They boasted about the blessings that God had given them. They considered these to be a result of their obedience to God. They considered themselves to be a privileged and special people of God, and they looked down on those who weren’t. The equivalent for us today might be being proud of belonging to the right church.

However, Paul told them, and us, that all boasting is excluded for those who are saved. This is because those who are in a right relationship with God are not under a law that requires works, but under a law that requires faith. You can’t boast about your performance, because with regard to justification, you have none. You can’t boast about your faith, because it is itself a gift from God (Rom 12:3; Eph 2:8).

All boasting is excluded for those who are saved.

The reality is that you are saved because of what someone else has done, and not because of what you have done. You are saved not because of your works, but because of your trust relationship (“faith”) with Jesus. If you want to boast at all, boast about him!

In this way, it is the humble, the meek, who are accepted before God, and who will receive his reward. As Christ taught,

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth (Matt. 5:5.)

Spiritual Application

When Paul tells us here that boasting is excluded not because of the law of works, but the law of faith, he is referring not to literal laws, but the principles that govern our lives. Is the governing principle of your life the law, or is it faith?
