Unlimited: Endure to the End
Mar 18, 2021 1928
Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved (Mark13:12–13, NIV).
Jesus told his disciples that they will be arrested and brought to trial for his sake. But he told them that things will get even worse than that!
Let’s continue with Jesus’ prophecy.
When Jesus talked about brother betraying brother to death, and fathers betraying their children to have them killed, and vice-versa, he is talking about the closest human bonds possible.
What is it about the Gospel that can causes such hatred so as to break these deepest, most cherished human relationships?
There is nothing wrong with the Gospel! It’s not the Gospel that causes relationships to fall apart.
In fact, the Gospel is about forming and deepening relationships at every level of existence, and especially within the bonds of family.
What we see here at work is the opposite of the Gospel. It is the work of sin and evil that tears relationships apart.
The same hatred that was manifested against Jesus will be directed against his followers.
Jesus said in the gospel of John,
Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
Jesus says that everyone will hate you because of him. And that’s why Jesus says that the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
This isn’t about believing some intellectual truth. The call of Jesus goes much deeper than that.
