Unlimited: He Who Searches Our Hearts

And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God (Romans 8:27).

While we may not always pray according to the will of God, the Spirit always perfectly intercedes for us according to God’s will.

In this verse, who is it who searches our hearts? Here it specifically isn’t the Spirit. The one who searches our hearts is the one who knows the mind of the Spirit and who connects us to God. The one who searches our hearts is Christ. Jesus is the one who intercedes for God’s people.

An intercessor must know the mind of both of the parties he reconciles. Jesus perfectly knows the mind of God, for he is God, and he perfectly knows our minds also, because he became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14.)

The one who searches our hearts is Christ.

One of the most important things in life is to know yourself. The Scriptures tell that any notion we may have that we truly understand ourselves is a delusion (Jer. 17:9).

Only God can give us true self-awareness and understanding, for he knows us perfectly. In the words of David:

You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar…

Search me, God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts
(Psalm 139:1–2,23.)

Spiritual Application

If you are willing, pray earnestly that Christ will search your heart and reveal to you more of your need of him. It’s a challenging prayer, and the result is usually even more confronting!
