Unlimited: The Lord of All

For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him (Romans 10:12).

In another passage about there being “no difference”, Paul told us earlier that,

There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:22(b)–23)

We are all alike sinners.

Now he tells us that there is no difference in another sense. There is no difference between people who may belong to different ethnic or religious groups in terms of their access to God and his blessings. In the context here, Paul is referring to the blessing of salvation.

The same Lord is Lord of all.

The Jews in Paul’s day made the mistake of thinking that they “owned” God and his blessings. This is an error that is easy to fall into even for believers today. It is the error of thinking that your religion has a monopoly on truth and on God’s blessings, which leads to exclusivism and pride, as it did in the time of Christ.

But Christ does not belong to any particular nation or church or denomination. His blessings are not exclusively, or even to a greater extent, for any particular group of those who profess to follow him. Certainly we should never, ever think for a moment that salvation is limited to those who think, look, or act in accordance with our own religious community.

Spiritual Application

Challenge yourself. If you don’t attend church regularly, pick a Christian church in your area and visit there this weekend. If you do attend church regularly, you can challenge yourself by attending the church of a different Christian confession or denomination this weekend. Go there to worship with an open mind, because “the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.”
