Caught In The Storm

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:40)

In Mark chapter 4, we are told about a time when Jesus and his disciples were out in a boat. They were crossing over to the other side of the lake, when suddenly a huge storm hit, and it was so serious that it looked like the boat might sink. The disciples were afraid so they went to Jesus who was sleeping through the storm, saying

Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”(verse 38).

They were terrified! And Jesus was in the boat with them, but he hadn’t stopped the storm, he hadn’t done anything about their problem. They were afraid that he would let them drown.

Verses 39 – 41 tell us what happened next.

He (Jesus) got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

In life we can be going along when suddenly a storm hits. Problems or situations can come along that overwhelm us. Bad things can happen. At those times we can feel like no matter how hard we try to stay afloat, we are sinking. Even when we know and are reminded that Jesus is with us, we can still begin to worry. It can feel like he is doing nothing about the situation, that he is letting us drown. Just like the disciples, our faith can waver.

We need to remember that Jesus is in the boat with us. Even when it seems like he is not doing anything, we need to have faith. He has a plan. As Jeremiah 29:11 says,

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jesus, who has control over the wind and the waves, has a plan for your life. You can have faith that the storm won’t overpower you. It may feel like your boat is sinking but it won’t go under. Jesus won’t let you drown.
