“How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, then follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him” ( 1 Kings 18:21).
Not following any god at all, is never an option for humans. Since we ourselves are not God; not all-wise, all-powerful and all good, it is for us to depend, to respond, to be beholden, indebted. Those who proudly noise abroad that they have no need to decide between theism or atheism, or who claim they have no need for any kind of religion, have in truth made a decision after all. They have chosen. They have become followers of another god; some other supreme value to give themselves to, which will in turn define their lives and shape its weal or woe.
