“Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendour, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfilment at Jerusalem” (Luke 9:30-31).
Moses and Elijah, who summed up the whole of Scripture (the Law and the Prophets), came to help Jesus prepare for his crucifixion. Those who have eyes to see, will recall that Jesus’ death and resurrection was pictured in the sanctuary service and its festivals, and in the stories of patriarchs and prophets.
If Jesus chose not to pay the penalty for our sins, then the whole of Old Testament Scripture would remain locked to our understanding. So Moses and Elijah, whose future immortality would also depend upon Jesus’ sacrifice, came to encourage him to fulfil his mission on earth.
