“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day…. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life” (John 6:54, 63).

The Jews were forbidden from eating meat from which the blood had not been drained: the blood stood for the life. To them, the blood belonged to God. When Jesus said we must drink his blood, he was saying that we must take his life completely into our lives, into the core of our hearts and minds. This was probably a surprising thing for the disciples to hear, and it taught them a valuable lesson about what it meant to accept Christ into their lives.

To eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus—symbolised by the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper—is to fully receive Christ, and his personal sacrifice on the Cross for you, into every aspect of your life. Do that, and you will be raised up to eternal life at the last day.

Jesus emphasises this promise by reminding us that his words contain the spirit of God and they can give life to everyone who believes and accepts them.
