Jesus said, “‘He was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment” (Luke 22:37).

Jesus, here quoting from Isaiah 53:12, pointed to the fact that he was soon to be crucified with criminals. He wasn’t only crucified with criminals; he was crucified as mankind’s corporate criminal – dying in the place of every one of us. But while he died as a substitute for every person, only those who accept him as their substitute will benefit from his sacrifice.
