“If I were hungry I would not tell you . . .” (Psalm 50:12).
Only God can talk this way, and be utterly truthful and good in so doing. We humans like the idea of being totally autonomous, but we can never really be so. We need each other. All the tribes of the earth are tied together in a bond of interdependence. But God is not part of that mutuality. While we need him, he does not need us. We have nothing to offer him to complement him, enable him, or complete him. This truth forms the bedrock of true religion. While we absolutely ought to give God our best in every detail of our existence, we never put him in our debt by doing so.
