Not Just Your Average Jesus
Not many people name their children “Jesus” today. But in first century Palestine, it was quite a common name, like “Bill,” or “Bob” today.
The wonderful thing is that when God came to us, he came with the commonest of names, to be one with us all: God with us. And if God is with us, who can be against us?
But as amazing as that is, it’s not the most incredible thing about the name “Jesus.” Because Jesus of Nazareth wasn’t just your average “Jesus.” Before his birth, the angel had told Joseph,
you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matt 1:21).
That’s actually what the name “Jesus” means: “God saves.” Jesus of Nazareth bore the name because he himself was the one who saves. He wasn’t just an average “Jesus.” And because of that none of us have an average destiny any more.
Jesus of Nazareth was not just your average Jesus and because of that none of us have an average destiny.
