Renew Your Strength

Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I will guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction; do not let it go; guard it well for it is your life (Proverbs 4:10-13).

Solomon’s words are directed primarily to his son, David, and secondarily to each of us. The “wisdom” and “instruction” that Solomon mentions is an oblique reference to the Lord. He “is your life.” Those who have the Lord dwelling within them are people whose lives are guided by him; they manifest his wisdom in their words and ways. Temptations come but because you have God dwelling within you, you will conquer that temptation. “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (1 Cor. 10:13).

The Gospel makes the most crooked path straight. With the light of God’s love to guide you, your steps will indeed not be hampered. Isaiah reminds us (chapter 40:31): “…but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Hold fast to the Lord and his ways and you will not be overcome by regret. You will have all the strength you need for the journey.
