In our last broadcast we referred to that first Thanksgiving when the Pilgrims, despite the fact that their numbers had been halved by death, gave thanks. We suggested that they had a different view of life and death to what we have today.

The first thanksgiving came after a dreadful winter. The bitter weather deposited half of the colonists into the windswept hillside cemetery. Only seven of the colony were healthy enough to tend the sick, yet they gave thanks.
