What are the maths of the Kingdom of God?

I have been thinking about the weird maths of the Kingdom of God.

I am convinced that this is the reason why – believe it or not – many Christians don’t understand Christianity.

You see, true Christianity teaches you to live by the principles of the gospel.

And the principles of the gospel are very unlike those you learnt at school.

Remember the wealthy young man who came to Jesus and asking him how he could have eternal life? Jesus told him to sell everything he and follow him.

Remember the miracle of the loaves and the fishes? It was only as Jesus gave them away that they were multiplied.

Remember the teaching of Jesus?

I assure you that unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it can only be a single seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their lives will lose them, and those who hate their lives in this world will keep them forever. – John 12:24–25

Jesus was speaking of the cross, and he was speaking about us. I recall the words of Tertullian, who wrote,

We are not a new philosophy but a divine revelation. That’s why you can’t just exterminate us; the more you kill the more we are. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.

The Maths of the Kingdom of God

The gospel teaches us to add by subtracting. It teaches us to multiply through division. And it teaches us to acquire wealth by giving things away.

Whatever would your accountant say! And the best place to see the truth of these principles is at the Cross.

Those who live in the Kingdom of God live their lives ordered on completely different principles to those of the world. And it is this that determines who are the true followers of Christ – his true disciples.

Life in the Kingdom is not an adaptation of life in the world, it is a total revolution. It requires you to unlearn everything you thought you knew about what is important in life and to learn again from Jesus.

We must learn the life changing maths of the Kingdom of God.
