Unlimited: A Remnant Chosen by Grace

So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace (Romans 11:5).

The concept of a “remnant” is one that is found in various places in Scripture. The original idea of a remnant refers to the portion of cloth that is left over (it “remains”) after a garment is made from it.

Here, the apostle Paul grounds his understanding of the “remnant” in Israel’s own story. The time in which the prophet Elijah lived was a time of widespread apostasy. However, even though who they were was not necessarily evident to the human, God still had faithful followers in Israel. In Elijah’s time, these were the remnant, and as Paul says, they were “chosen by grace.”

A remnant has always been “chosen by grace.” Paul tells us that this was true in his day, and that it is true in our day as well.

A remnant has always been “chosen by grace.”

It is very important to understand this. God’s covenant promises with Israel were, from the start, always intended to be fulfilled with spiritual, true Israel (the “remnant”) and not with the entirety of national Israel.

All have been called, but not all respond. All are invited, but not all are chosen to attend, as Jesus said in the conclusion to the Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matt. 22:14).

The ones who are chosen are the ones who respond. Thus, we are always “chosen by grace” for salvation.
