Unlimited: Against All Hope

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (Romans 4:18.).
The phrase “against all hope” means that Abraham believed when the situation was absolutely hopeless. He continued believing even when it seemed that there was no chance that God’s promise to him would ever be fulfilled.
In the ancient middle east to be childless was a source of great shame. The story of Abraham demonstrates just how desperate Abraham was to have a son.
There is no sinner for whom God’s promise of salvation is hopeless as long as they hold onto the promise of God, even believing “against all hope.
God had promised to bless him with a son, and with as many descendants as there are stars in the sky or grains of sand on the seashore. He had waited for years for that to happen, but now was an old man and his wife’s childbearing days were a long time in the past. According to all human reason, Abraham should have lost all hope. Yet he believed in hope that God’s promise to him would be fulfilled.
The promise of a Saviour who would save his people was central to the promises given through the patriarchs and the prophets of the Old Testament. There is no sinner, no matter how vile, for whom God’s promise of salvation is hopeless. This is as long as they do what Abraham did, and they hold onto the promise of God, even believing “against all hope.”
