Unlimited: Children of the Living God

…and, “In the very place where it was said to them,’ You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’” (Romans 9:26).
The apostle Paul is quoting again from Hosea (1:10). Like Israel, Gomer through her continued prostitution had forfeited her place among God’s people, but through God’s grace, they will now be called “children of the living God.”
The Lord applies these words to the restoration of Israel, and Paul now applies them to the calling of the Gentiles. This is an instance that illustrates how Paul is taking the promises that were made to Israel, and reapplying them to the Gentiles, who are now “spiritual Israel.”
We are now “children of the living God”.
Israel had chosen to follow gods who were not gods. They were dead gods, powerless and useless. That’s why the true God characterises himself as the “the living God” (Josh. 3:10; Jer. 10:10; Dan. 6:26.)
“[I]n the same place” of Israel’s greatest failure, God will bring about their greatest triumph. In the same way, at Calvary, “the same place” of humanity’s greatest failure, God poured out the riches of his saving grace. We are now “children of the living God”:
remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ (Eph. 2:13–15.)
Review your life. What was the time and place of your greatest failure? In what way did God turn that into the place of greatest grace for you?
