Unlimited: Do Not Be Proud

Do not be proud (Romans 12:16b).

Pride is the original sin. In the words of Proverbs 16:18:

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Paul’s words in the Greek are literally, “Don’t set your mind on high things.”

That’s what pride is: it is setting your mind on high things. What are the high things to which Paul is referring?

Do not be proud.

The prophet Isaiah says to the king of Babylon:

You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High” (Isa. 14:13-14.)

Here, the king of Babylon, who also represents Satan, has set his mind on “high things.” To “set your mind on high things” is to think of yourself more highly than you ought, and to aspire to more than what you are and what you have, apart from God.

However, if we first set our minds on the things that are heavenly and spiritual, we will be blessed with everything we could ever need, or even dream of (Col. 3:2; Matt. 6:33.)

Spiritual Application

What are your aspirations in this world? What are the things you want more of in life? Do you want more of Christ with an even greater intensity?
