Unlimited: For Whom Did Christ Die?

Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6b)
When I was a legalistic perfectionist, I hated this verse. I knew what it said, but I refused to believe it. Surely Christ died for those who were good and the obedient, the lovable and the loving!
But when I truly understood the Gospel, I understood this astonishing revelation: Christ died for the ungodly! He didn’t die for the perfect. He didn’t die for those who had made substantial improvements in their lives. He didn’t die for those who showed potential. He didn’t die for those who had met the specified conditions. And he certainly didn’t die for the righteous.
Christ died for you.
This core truth of the Gospel is as astonishing for us today as it was for Christ’s contemporaries back in the first century. They were scandalised by Jesus and his care and regard for sinners. They couldn’t understand it either. However, Jesus made it clear to the people of his day that,
I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32); and
the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10).
This is a vital truth that we must understand. Heaven will be filled with the ungodly: the forgiven ungodly.
Because Christ died for the ungodly, Christ died for you.
Who is the person you know who might be the least deserving of the sacrifice that Jesus made? It might be the person who is causing you the most stress and annoyance right now! I challenge you today to go and spend twenty minutes praying only for them, so that they might be blessed.
