Unlimited: How Sin Put Me to Death

For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death (Romans 7:11).

Here is a basic principle: sin deceives you in order to put you to death. This deception consists in convincing us that the way of sin will bring us a better life, but it is a lie. It will bring you only death; not only death everlasting, but it will also salt your heart, thoughts, your words, and your relationships with death’s bitter savour.

God warns us that,

The heart is deceitful above all things
    and beyond cure.
    Who can understand it?
(Jeremiah 17:9)

Sin deceives you in order to put you to death.

Paul is saying that sin hijacks the law for its own deadly purposes. It does this by deceiving us so that we will not understand the true purpose of the law and instead seek in it a means of righteousness. Sin is so deceitful that it will use even that which is good, such as the law, to entrap us and lead us to death. When Paul refers to the commandment putting him to death, he is referring to lawful, judicial execution.

In this way, the devil uses the law to steal our chance of righteousness away from us. As Jesus said,

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10.)

The only way to life is through Jesus.

Spiritual Application

In your experience, how have you seen the law of God hijacked and abused by other people in order to bring death to people who are seeking Jesus? How can you keep safe from such deceptions?
