Unlimited: I Don’t Understand What I Do

I do not understand what I do (Romans 7:15a).

Paul here expresses the common lot of humanity. As much as we may think that others don’t understand us, the truth is that we don’t understand ourselves.

I’ve known people who have studied philosophy at university to gain understanding about the human condition. I’ve studied a little philosophy myself. The more philosophy you read the more confused you will become, because it has no answers for humanity, only speculation about what might be.

The reason why we ultimately cannot understand what makes us “tick” is because sin has muddied the waters of our understanding. Sin fundamentally deceives us so that we cannot see and live in reality.

The truth is that we don’t understand ourselves.

It is the most natural thing in the world for us, as fallen humans, to trust our own hearts. We refer to this tendency in many ways. Some people refer to it as following their instinct, or as “their truth” or they wrongly refer to it as “following their conscience.” But the wise man wrote long ago that:

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered (Prov. 28:26, NKJV.)

Spiritual Application

How well do you think you really understand yourself? Can you think of a time when you trusted your own heart and it turned out badly for you? What did you learn from that?
