Unlimited: In View of God’s Mercy

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy (Romans 12:1a).
Romans 12 marks the beginning of the second major section in Paul’s epistle to the Romans.
In chapters 1–11, Paul has presented the Gospel. Now, from chapter 12 onwards, Paul will explain the results of the Gospel: how someone who understands the Gospel should live.
The word “therefore,” with which Paul begins this section, encompasses everything he has written before. It essentially means, “because of the Good News that you have been saved by the grace of God, through faith, and not through any performance of works on your part.”
So great is God’s mercy toward us, revealed through the Gospel, that Paul is imploring us, and even begging us, to respond.
Paul encompasses all of this with the phrase, “in view of God’s mercy.” We depend on God’s mercy for absolutely everything. That has always been true and always will be. The prophet Jeremiah wrote:
Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness (Lam. 3:22–23.)
In view of God’s mercy, Paul now “urges” us to live in a certain way. The Greek word here translated as “urge” is a very strong word. So great is God’s mercy toward us, revealed through the Gospel, that Paul is imploring us, and even begging us, to respond.
What Paul has revealed in the preceding chapters of Romans is no mere theological teaching. It must transform our lives.

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus Our Lord. This verse elaborates that even though I am captive to the bond of sins ever since birth, Christ Jesus came to die on Calvary for my sins, therefore I should be grateful and thankful for this sacrificial death, give my life wholly to God alone to lead me every single day of my life on this earth. Because only through Him I would be able to encounter the works of the devil and life challenges.
