Unlimited: Recognising Sin for What it Is

Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful (Romans 7:13.)

Fallen human beings consistently fail to recognise sin for what it is. It is all too easy for us to justify our sin in a myriad of different ways. It is easy for us to justify ourselves (Luke 16:15) into thinking that sin isn’t as bad as it really is. One of the ways in which we do this is to believe that some sins are more “sinful” than others, and therefore that some sinners are worse than others. However, if we understand the nature of God, we will also understand just how “utterly sinful” any sin is.

All and any sin separates us from God.

Sin, by its very nature, always attempts to hide within us and deceives us. Charles Spurgeon wrote,

This is one of the most deplorable results of sin. It injures us most by taking from us the capacity to know how much we are injured. It undermines the man’s constitution, and yet leads him to boast of unfailing health; it beggars him, and tells him he is rich; it strips him, and makes him glory in his fancied robes.

All and any sin separates us from God and brings untold devastation and death. Consider the first sin, which to all appearances consisted merely of eating a forbidden fruit, and then reflect on the misery that it allowed into the world.

Spiritual Application

Reflect on your own life. Is there a sin of yours that you once minimized but later came to realise just how far-reaching its consequences were in your life? Could that be true in many other areas of your life also?
