Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written, ‘It is mine to repay,’ says the Lord (Romans 12:19).
If you take revenge for a wrong that is done to you, then you are pushing God aside and taking over a responsibility that belongs to him alone.
Only God knows the motives and reasons why someone has done you wrong, and only he can correctly match the punishment to the wrong deed, so don’t try to do God’s work for him or you will be committing a great wrong yourself.
When Eva’s husband, Paul, died of a sudden heart attack while driving his car, she suddenly felt very guilty for the years in which she had made Paul’s life a misery with her constant bickering and yelling. But instead of repenting of her sin she heaped the blame on Paul’s workmate, Jim, who had had a fall-out with Paul some time earlier. She was so bitter about that she refused to let Jim see Paul lying in his casket at the funeral. Even though approached by others who pleaded with her to forgive and forget she resolutely refused to do so. She even went further by declaring that she would destroy the church that these people belonged to, However, all she did was destroy her own credibility, and she eventually lost her job because of who she had made herself.
Being bitter over a supposed wrong that is done to you is a way of seeking revenge, but it is out of place because such an attitude means you don’t trust God to deal with the issue in a full, complete and timely manner. Leave repayment to the Lord.
