You see it all the time. Secular commentators get the great global conflicts wrong yet again, blindsided the latest development in world affairs. Why, for example, isn’t the war on terror finished with yet? And there are many other examples.
Here’s why. It’s because they are secular. That means they are blind to things beyond the secular. Not only do they refuse to acknowledge the existence of God, but they also therefore refuse to acknowledge the role of religion in the great issues of this world.
They limit the causes and effects to economics, politics, social policy, and so on, and they refuse to acknowledge the impact of religion upon this world. Not only, for example, do they often completely deny the enormous contributions of Christianity to western civilisation and society, but they are quick to point out the errors that religion has committed in the past.
Not only do they refuse to understand that the war on terror is religious in nature, but also that it is much larger than they ever though.
Here is the truth that explains what is happening in our world at the geopolitical level, and at every level:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. – Ephesians 6:12
We will never understand the great geopolitical problems of this world unless we understand this. And we will never solve them either. Because the only one who can is Jesus Christ.
However, for many of us, it is not global terrorism that causes us to be afraid, but own selves. If we look at ourselves, there’s enough terror to be found there to cause sufficient grief for a lifetime. But Christ has defeated the enemy, both in the world and within ourselves.
Christ has faced the greatest terror and overcome! The Gospel is the Good News that there is no terror – now for forever – for those who are in Christ.
We are not caught by surprise as those who don’t believe. We do not despair. We remember the words of our Lord,
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world – John 16:33.
So we take heart! Through Christ’s victory at the Cross, God has already won the war on terror. There is no place for fear in your life any more, if you have have believed in the name of Jesus. All you have to do is trust in him.
